1895 was an extremely sad year for the Kauffman family. In May of that year two year old Fanny died. Later in July, 12 year old Jonny died. Nine years later, their sister Susie made this pair of samplers in memory of her sister and brother. School girl samples, American, needlework wool on linen, a touching memorial compositions with applied fabric flower bouquets in corners, one dedicated to "Jonny / Age 12 years", and the other dedicated to "Fanny / Age 1 year 11 months". Each housed under glass in a period gold-painted frame. Good condition. Circa 1904. Approximately 13 1/2" x 10 1/2" sight.
