A pretty school girl needlework sampler. This example is framed with a poem---- New England petit point sampler in silk on linen, by Susan Guy, aged 13 years, and dated 1848. With acorn and leaf border, two cats at bottom, birds and flowers surrounding the poem, which reads "Humility; Tis not beauty that we prize, like a summer flower it was, but humility will last, fair and sweet when beauty's past, and the Saviour from above, views the humble child with love". In (I believe) original mitered pumpkin pine frame, with gilt liner, under original glass, OS: 22" x 18 1/4", SS: 16 3/4" x 13", Overall good condition.
