A pretty oil on canvas painting of a terrier dog - I believe this is a Jack Russell terrier. Painted by Alfred Duke (British, 1863-1905), late 19th century. Signed lower right corner 'A. Duke'. Beautifully done of two terriers with dead hares to the side. Wooded area to the rear. Duke was especially known for his painting of dogs and, rarely, other animals. Many of his paintings have sold well into five figures. In excellent condition and overall 23.75 x 20.0. Housed in a frame (not original) with stamp on reverse from a Sudbury, Suffolk framer. Provenance: The Estate of Robert V. Hatcher, Jr. of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia.
