The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Floral border. Colors black, cream, green, copper and brown. Verses read 'Preserve me Lord amidst a crowd>From every thought thats vain or proud>And raise my wandering mind to see>How good it is to trust in Thee' and 'He is a God of Sovreign love>That promised heaven to me>And taught my thoughts to soar above> Where happy spirits be>Prepare me Lord for thy right hand>Then come the Joyful day>Come death and some celestial band>To bear my soul away'. Signed and dated 'Cordelia Vernnes Aged Eleven Years 1829'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a shepherdess and her flock of sheep, dogs, potted flowering plants, trees laden with fruit, some of which has fallen onto the ground, stags, fruit basket, birds and butterflies. Approximately 27.5 x 26.5 inches. In overall excellent condition with very minor losses---please review photos carefully. A rather large size and certainly bright with good contrast.
